Short Story: Order Recovering Idiot
Long Story:
I’m Ben Casper. I was involved in the grain entrapment story. Usually if I’m around accidents, I’m the cause. But not this time. It truly was not a good day. I had warned the father several times to not bring his kid around the facility. He just blew me off and kept bringing him along. You can read more about it in my book or listen to the audiobook.
I was the first of nine kids raised on an irrigated farm back in the early day of the Columbia Basin of WA state. I beat long odds and survived my teenage years and the hits just kept on coming!
I double-talked my way into marriage and against all odds, am still married to my dear wife Michele 47 years later. Couples can learn a lot about staying together just by hearing our story. 6 kids and 18 grandkids have followed in our at-times turbulent wake.
I’ve dabbled in farming, owned several tire stores and sold propane for 25 years. Eventually I got sick of those vocations and made an idiotic decision to let a shyster shake me down for a half a million before I wised up and took my keys back. I’ve led a pretty crazy life from start to finish. The only unknown left in my life is what the finish will look like. The first time I tried to exit was in 1959. It’s been an ongoing drama ever since. I’m a very old 71 due to the 30+ bones I’ve broken and all the accidents I’ve caused. Last year the surgeon who sawed some jawbone and teeth out of my oral cavity said I am a very lucky guy. She has no idea. That was my last close call.
People say I have a death wish. I think St. Peter who sits at the gate has refused to let my guardian angels have a day off and that’s the only reason I’m still here.
Do you believe in close calls and second chances? For me, they roll around about every other day. I’m told that’s what makes my story so interesting. My bone-headed impulsiveness and over-the-top confidence also contribute to the mix.
